Frequently asked questions.

What subjects and grade levels do you offer tutoring for?

I offer tutoring services for ages 5-12 (~grades Kdg-6th). The subject areas I tutor are Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Math, Science, and Social Studies. I can also offer Elementary Art, PE, and Music, though I consider these special areas and an opportunity for Mentorship.

Do you offer online tutoring, in-person sessions, or both?

Currently, I am offering in-person tutoring only at my home. I am happy to meet elsewhere for an extra fee which varies, depending on distance.

What is the duration of each tutoring session?

Each tutoring session is one hour long.

How often are tutoring sessions recommended?

Like most of the meaningful parts of tutoring, this will vary based on student needs, but it is my recommendation upper elementary students (3rd-6th) meet with me two to three times a week to best benefit from the extra instruction without overwhelming the student. For lower elementary (Kdg-2nd), I recommend starting with two sessions for the first week, but then making it one day a week. This gives me an extra day to observe and assess which in turn helps me prepare for our sessions. We want little minds eager to learn, not burdened by learning.

What is your pricing structure for tutoring services? Do you offer any discounts or packages for multiple sessions?

We are currently in a discount season! Click here for more information about the January-March 2024 Package Rate.

The price for tutoring services is $40 for one session per week.

For multiple sessions a week, pricing is $35/hr.

(For example: 2 days/week=$70, 3 days/week=$105, and so on)

What is your policy on missed or canceled sessions?

I require cancellation notification by 10am the morning of our session day. Cancellation notifications after that time, you will be billed $25 for that session. Any missed session without notification will require you to still pay the regular price per session.

How does the tutoring process work?

My process is simple and natural. I discuss concerns with the parent first and have you fill out a small questionnaire to better understand your student. We schedule a date and time that fits our schedules for me to meet with your student at my home for hour-long sessions. During that hour, I will take time to see how your student is thinking about their education and encourage them to have a good attitude towards learning. Depending on the subject matter, your student and I may work on homework their Primary teacher(s) sends home, math drills and games, reading drills and games, creative writing and then editing the writing to have perfect grammar, science concepts, social studies concepts, etc… I use several different methods of learning and study so that your student can find how they learn best and carry that with them into their future learning. Part of this time will also be assessing their knowledge to gain an understanding of where your child is at compared to where they should be. We move forward from there.

How do you assess a student's learning needs?

Like most of the meaningful parts of tutoring, this will vary based on student needs. For reading, I will have your child read basic passages/decodable books depending on the levels they should be. For math, your student will run basic math problem solving skills for me, both written and audibly. Observational Assessments will be recorded by paper and pencil for parental use. It is one of my goals to really show you your student’s progress as they work with me.

What makes your tutoring services unique or different?

In my opinion, two basic things make my tutoring services unique:

1) I take a positive big-picture approach to each student I have. I look at the culture, family, and interests surrounding them. I quickly see how this affects their learning behaviors, and we turn those into positive learning opportunities. Yes, some external factors can play a negative role in a child’s learning, but every external affect is an opportunity for a choice, and I help student’s choose positive ways to respond to outside experiences. As a well-rounded educator, I have experienced all styles of educating (public education, private education, and home school) and watched how it has evolved over the years. I have gone through many curriculums and professional development to grow my resources bank and knowledge of what is available. But the coolest, newest, trendy activity or curriculum does not make it one-size-fits-all and the use of it should be carefully monitored. Sometimes, a student needs a trip back to the basics before pulling out something shiny and new. Sometimes, going back to the basics can certainly be approached as shiny and new. A student’s world is worth looking at.

2) I am patient. Children have varying personalities and varying antics. I have patience for all kinds of behavior and make it a goal to work past negative behaviors to achieve educational goals. I will not be turned off by bad-behavior and work hard to still maintain progress through it. If behavior appears to hinder your student from learning, I may request a more mentorship approach, spending time doing activities and having conversations to build the student’s self-esteem.
